Roberto Berni Canani, professore di Pediatria all’Università Federico II, è dal 2010 anni console onorario della Repubblica di Lettonia a Napoli. “Mi piace ricordare di essere divenuto console onorario grazie a Capri. Alcuni anni fa, un caro amico che ho conosciuto sull’Isola, proprietario della più bella casa di Capri (e probabilmente del mondo – Casa Malaparte) e rappresentante della Repubblica di Lettonia a Firenze, mi chiese la cortesia di aiutare lo sviluppo di iniziative per lo studio e la cura di alcune severe patologie pediatriche presso il Children’s Hospital di Riga. Pur preso da mille impegni, la cortese e tenace insistenza del mio amico “caprese” mi convinse ad accettare l’incarico. La passione e l’inventiva “napoletana” uniti al rigore “lettone” determinarono il successo di queste iniziative che hanno portato negli anni alla creazione di centri avanzati di gastroenterologia, genetica, chirurgia non-invasiva e neuropsichiatria infantile. La nomina a console onorario fu la conseguenza del successo di queste iniziative. In occasione dei numerosi viaggi di lavoro ho avuto modo di conoscere una nazione assolutamente meravigliosa per la bellezza della natura, l’eleganza delle città, e la ricchezza del patrimonio artistico e culturale. La Lettonia è ricca di spiagge, boschi, fiumi e spazi incontaminati, gelosamente custoditi. Questa attenta custodia delle bellezze più segrete è una delle cose che più ammiro del loro carattere nazionale. È una nazione a vocazione “green”, che agevola l’imprenditorialità giovane, le tecnologie sostenibili, le arti e le startup. Negli anni sono riuscito anche a fare innamorare tutti i lettoni di Napoli e di Capri, a partire dalle più alte cariche politiche del Paese. Molti di loro, in maniera discreta come è nel loro stile, sono ormai di casa a Capri e sono pazzi del mare, della Piazzetta e della cucina dell’isola azzurra. E memorabile fu la serata che organizzammo al Teatro di Corte di Palazzo Reale di Napoli con il concerto del pianista lettone Georgijs Osokins organizzato con la pregevole collaborazione dell’Associazione Alessandro Scarlatti e dello stesso Palazzo Reale per celebrare il semestre di Presidenza del Consiglio dell’Unione Europea”.
La vocazione cosmopolita caratterizza ogni attività del professor Berni Canani, riconosciuto a livello internazionale come uno dei principali ricercatori nel campo della gastroenterologia, delle malattie indotte da alimenti e della nutrizione pediatrica. Dal 2013 è incluso nella lista dei 100 migliori scienziati italiani. È il direttore dell’“ImmunoNutritionLab” presso il Ceinge Biotecnologie Avanzate. È membro dell’Autorità Europea per la Sicurezza degli Alimenti (EFSA) dal 2012. “Lavoro tantissimo e con passione, dividendomi ogni giorno tra attività di ricerca e clinica. Viaggio moltissimo per lavoro e mi ritengo fortunato di poter lavorare a Napoli presso un ateneo così prestigioso come la Federico II dove negli anni sono riuscito a creare sinergie molto proficue ed un team di ricerca che non cambierei per nulla al mondo. Le più grandi ispirazioni mi provengono ogni giorno dal contatto con i piccoli pazienti, poi torno in laboratorio e programmo con i miei ragazzi le attività sperimentali per definire strategie sempre migliori per la prevenzione e la cura di numerose patologie pediatriche”.
Tra le passioni di Berni Canani, da sempre, oltre al lavoro, a primeggiare c’è anche la “sua” Capri. “Ho da sempre avuto casa al Castiglione e ho ricordi stupendi delle mie lunghissime vacanze estive tra le passeggiate per stradine e sentieri di Capri e Anacapri, il mare, e le notti interminabili nei leggendari bar, nei ristoranti e i locali notturni dell’Isola. Conosco ogni angolo di terra e mare dell’isola. Adoro lo Scoglio del Monacone (saliteci almeno una volta nella vita), la baia della Grotta Verde (il mio posto preferito per fare il bagno), la piccola spiaggetta bianca prima di punta del Monaco (dove solo al mattino presto c’è uno spicchio di sole che rende l’acqua di un colore formidabile). Il panorama al tramonto da Casa Malaparte o da Piana delle Noci mi lascia sempre senza fiato. Purtroppo negli ultimi anni i troppi impegni di lavoro mi hanno impedito di frequentare assiduamente l’isola. Ma quando sono a Capri non rinuncio mai ad una sosta al Bar Tiberio o al Bar del Quisisana prima di andare (spesso controra come amano i turisti stranieri) da Aurora o a Villa Verde dal mio amico Franco per farmi tentare dalle prelibatezze del luogo. L’isola è molto cambiata rispetto a quando ero ragazzino e, anche se i tempi cambiano, devo dare atto a tutti gli amici capresi di essere riusciti a mantenere l’isola al passo delle più ambite mete turistiche del mondo. Sono certo che chi la conosce bene e la ama ritroverà sempre almeno in un panorama, in un riflesso del mare, in un angolo qualsiasi o anche solo in un sorriso di un marinaio del porto o di un cameriere della piazzetta o di un autista di quegli straordinari taxi la “propria” Capri, quella che ognuno di noi ha ben conservata nel proprio cuore”.
With a speck of light, the water takes on an extraordinary color
Roberto Berni Canani, professor of Pediatrics at the University Federico II, has been honorary consul of the Republic of Latvia in Naples since 2010. “I like remembering how I became honorary consul in Capri. Some years ago, a dear friend of mine I met on the island, owner of the most beautiful house in Capri (and probably in the whole world – Casa Malaparte) and representative of the Republic of Latvia in Florence, asked me to help him in developing initiatives for the study and cure of certain severe pediatric disease at the Children’s Hospital of Riga. Even though I was occupied with a lot of tasks, the kind and tenacious persistence of my ‘Caprese’ friend convinced me in accepting the assignment. The ‘Neapolitan’ passion and inventiveness, united to the ‘Latvian’ rigor determined the success of these initiatives that over the years have led to the creation of advanced centers of Gastroenterology, Genetics, non-invasive surgery and child Psychiatry. The appointment to honorary consul what the result of the success of these initiatives. On occasion of several work trips I had the chance to know a wonderful nation for the beauty of nature, the elegance of the cities, and the richness of the artistic and cultural heritage. Latvia is rich in beaches, forests, rivers and uncontaminated places, carefully preserved. This thoughtful safeguard of the most hidden beauties is one of the things I admire about their national temperament. It is a ‘green’ nation, that supports young entrepreneurs, eco-sustainable technologies, arts and startups. Over the years I managed to make all Latvian fall in love with Naples and Capri, starting from the highest political figures of the Country. Many of them, discretely as their style dictates, are by now at home in Capri and they are crazy about the sea, the Piazzetta and the cuisine of the blue island. The soiree we organized at the Court Theater of the Royal Palace of Naples was truly memorable, featuring the concert of the Latvian pianist Georgijs Osokins, organized with the valuable collaboration of the Alessandro Scarlatti Organization and the very same Royal Palace, to celebrate the semester of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union”.
This cosmopolite vocation characterizes every activity of Professor Berni Canani, internationally recognized as one of the main researchers in the field of Gastroenterology, food-induced diseases and Pediatric Nutrition. Since 2013, he has been included in the list of the 100 best Italian scientists. He is director the “ImmunoNutritionLab” at Ceinge Advanced Biotechnologies. He has been member of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) since 2012. “I work a lot and with a lot of passion, juggling between research activity and clinic. I travel a lot for work and I feel lucky to be working in Naples, in such a prestigious University such as the Federico II where over the years I have been able to create very productive synergies and a research team I would not change for anything in the world. My greatest inspirations come every day from the direct contact with the little patients, then I go back to the laboratory and I plan together with my pupils, experimental activities to define better strategies for the prevention and cure of several pediatric diseases”.
Among Berni Canani’s passions, in addition to his work there has always been “his” Capri.
“I have always had home at the Castiglione and I have wonderful memories of my long summer vacations, with the walks among the little streets and paths in Capri and Anacapri, the sea, the endless nights in the legendary bars, in the restaurants and the night clubs of the Island. I know every corner, land and sea, of the island. I love the Monacone Rock (you should climb it at least once in your life), the bay of the Green Grotto (my favorite place for a swim), the tiny white beach before Punta del Monaco (when only in the morning, with a speck of light, water takes on an extraordinary color). The view at sunset from Casa Malaparte or from Piana delle Noci always leaves me breathless. Unfortunately, during the last years the many work assignments have prevented me to regularly frequent the island. But when I am in Capri I can never renounce to a break at Bar Tiberio or the Quisisana Bar before going (often in the early afternoon, as many foreign tourists love to do) at Aurora or Villa Verde, to meet my friend Franco and let him tempt me with the local delicacies. The island has changed a lot compared to when I was a kid and, even if times change, I must give credit to all the Caprese friends that they have managed the keep the island up to date with the most popular tourism destinations in the world. I am sure that those who know well the island and love it will always find in a view, a sea reflection, in any corner or even simply in the smile of a sailor in the port, a waiter in the Piazzetta, or a driver of those extraordinary taxis their “own “Capri, the Capri that we all keep close to our hearts”.
