Nato a Catania, classe 1978, Gianluca Pennisi diplomato all’istituto tecnico commerciale, ha prestato il servizio di leva nell’arma dei Carabinieri, dove non ha poi voluto mettere la cosiddetta “firma”, il destino aveva per lui altri programmi. Infatti, sulla sua strada la famiglia Restivo. Il gruppo Restivo nasce come azienda orafa nel 1922 a Enna, con quelli che erano i canoni delle antichissime tradizioni siciliane orafe, nel 1955 si è poi spostata a Catania, non solo gioielleria ma anche orologeria. Il salto nel tempo si è avuto nel 1985 con l’acquisizione del marchio Patek Philippe, a cui si sono aggiunti Audemars Piguet, Breguet, i brand del gruppo Richemont e molti altri. Gli atelier orafi all’insegna Restivo sono situati a Catania, Siracusa, Taormina, Panarea e Capri. Gianluca Pennisi all’interno del gruppo Restivo ha presto scalato la vetta divenendo direttore dei punti vendita di Capri.
“Mio nonno lavorava con il gruppo Restivo da oltre trent’anni, mi chiese di accompagnarlo, nel momento in cui ero pronto a partire per Bergamo per un’esperienza lavorativa che mirava a tutt’altro. Cosi dopo l’incontro con il timoniere Giovanni Restivo non sono partito più, iniziando un rapporto professionale nel punto vendita di Catania, poi continuando a Taormina per nove anni”.
Dopo Taormina, Gianluca Pennisi arriva a Napoli per gestire la nuova apertura di Trucchi orologeria in piazza Trieste e Trento, nella città partenopea ha vissuto per tutto il periodo, fino a quando il patron dell’azienda, Giovanni Restivo ha rilevato punti vendita sull’isola azzurra, nella prestigiosa via Camerelle, prevalentemente la strada dello shopping di lusso, affidando a Gianluca Pennisi la direzione di Hublot e Patek Philippe.
“Con l’apertura a Capri mi sono ritrovato a gestire contemporaneamente sia il punto vendita a Napoli che il neo-nato sull’isola, la prima volta che venivo a Capri, non c’ero mai stato prima di allora. Provenivo da Taormina che comunque è definita la perla dello Ionio, ma Capri ha un livello nettamente superiore, ne sono rimasto entusiasta sin da subito”.
Tutto è iniziato nel campo della gioielleria per poi appassionarsi definitivamente all’orologio.
“Effettivamente il gioiello non mi rappresentava molto quanto invece l’orologio, un mondo che continua ad affascinarmi tutt’oggi, continuo a seguire corsi di specializzazione a Ginevra, interfacciandomi con diversi brand e le diverse manifatture, per presentarli al cliente nel giusto modo illustrando tutte le caratteristiche ed il funzionamento”.
Come vive Capri nei momenti di relax?
“Quando arrivo dalla terra ferma, dove c’è un tenore di vita e di lavoro diverso perché devi stare sempre con gli occhi ben aperti, più frenetico e molto movimentato, Capri mi rilassa, mi distendo nella tranquillità più assoluta, trovo un ambiente familiare visto che sono qui ormai da nove anni, e divento caprese a tutti gli effetti. Quando non lavoro mi piace svegliarmi comunque presto la mattina e godermi già le prime ore del giorno, fitto volentieri un gozzo e godermi il mare”.
Cosa sognava di fare da bambino?
“Sognavo di diventare un pilota di formula uno e sfrecciare con le macchine, gareggiando in quelle piste meravigliose”.
Lavorando con le lancette questa isola può essere etichettata come un posto senza tempo?
“Lavorando nel mondo degli orologi, posso dire che quando lavoro non guardo l’orologio, perché lo faccio veramente con passione. La fortuna di Capri è che si può lavorare tranquillamente, senza adeguarsi alle misure di sicurezza delle città, la bellezza è che i negozi diventano dei salotti dove ospitare i clienti, non prettamente con l’intenzione di dover concludere una vendita ma per il piacere di mostrare gli orologi che magari hanno visto sulle riviste e colmare le loro domande con spiegazioni esaustive”.
Da circa un mese si è concluso l’evento organizzato dal brand Pateck Philippe al Capri Rooftop a ridosso degli splendidi Giardini di Augusto, un posto pieno di storia e cultura e di profonda bellezza.
“Patek Philippe è innamorato di Capri, questo è il secondo anno consecutivo che sceglie questa location, confermata anche per il prossimo anno, un posto esclusivo e suggestivo visto il panorama e l’atmosfera che si gode dalla terrazza. In quest’occasione c’è la presentazione degli orologi della nuova collezione, disposti in apposite vetrinette, pezzi esclusivi per un pubblico di nicchia, durante la serata i clienti possono provare l’orologio e se soddisfa il gusto può essere anche ordinato”.
Gianluca Pennisi cosa pensa e come vede Capri nel suo futuro?
“Capri per me rappresenta una dimensione diversa di vita e di lavoro, il posto più bello che abbia potuto mai incontrare e che mi sarà molto difficile, forse impossibile, lasciare un giorno, qui i capresi sono molto ospitali e sono onorato di essere stato ben accolto da subito, non esiste nel mondo un posto uguale a Capri, unica ed esclusiva, il posto dove forse un giorno non troppo lontano metterò le radici”.
One day, not too far off, I will settle down
Born in Catania in 1978, Gianluca Pennisi, graduated at the commercial technical instate, was conscripted in the police force, but he decided not to put the usual “signature”, fate had something else in store for him. Indeed, on his path he encounters the Restivo family. The Restivo Group begins as a jewelry company in 1922, in Enna, following those the standards of the ancient jewelry Sicilian traditions, in 1955 it moves to Catania, expanding to watchmaking as well. The leap in time happens in 1985 with the take-over of the Patek Philippe brand, soon followed by Audemars Piguet, Breguet, the Richemont Group brands and many others. The Restivo gold ateliers are based in Catania, Syracuse, Taormina, Panarea and Capri. Gianluca Pennisi, has quickly climbed the peak of the Restivo Group, becoming the manager of the Capri stores.
“My grandfather, who been working with the Restivo Group for more than thirty years, asked me to accompany him, when I was about to leave for Bergamo, in a completely unrelated working experience. So, after meeting the patron Giovanni Restivo, I no longer left, beginning a professional relationship in the Catania store, and then in Taormina for nine years”.
After Taormina, Gianluca Pennisi arrives in Naples, to manage the new opening of Trucchi watchmaking, in Piazza Trieste e Trento. He lives in the Parthenopean city for the entire time, until the patron of the firm, Giovanni Restivo, acquires several stores on the blue island, in the prestigious via Camerellle, the luxury shopping street, entrusting Gianluca Pennisi with the management of Hublot and Patek Philippe.
“With the Capri opening, I found myself managing at the same time both the Naples and the Capri stores, and for the first time ever I visited Capri, I had never been there before. I come from Taormina, which is nonetheless called the pearl of the Ionian Sea, yet Capri is definitely on a superior different, I was immediately enchanted by it”.
Everything began in the jewelry field and then you developed a passion for watchmaking.
“As a matter of fact, jewelry did not represent me as much as watchmaking, a world that continues to fascinate me to this day. I still follow specialization courses in Geneva, keeping in touch with different brands and manufactures, and introducing them to the customers in the proper way, illustrating all their features and their functioning”.
How do you live your moments or relaxations?
“Every time I arrive from the mainland, where there are different living and working standards, more hectic and busy as you must always keep your eyes open, Capri relaxes me, I unwind in absolute tranquility, I find a familiar environment, as I have arrived here more than nine years ago, and I become a true Caprese. When I am not working, I like getting up early in the morning and experiencing the first hours of the day, renting a boat and enjoying the sea”.
What did you want to be as a child?
“I dreamed of being a Formula 1 pilot, competing in those wonderful tracks with speeding cars”.
You work with time; do you believe this island can be labeled as a timeless place?
“Working in the watchmaking field, I can say that I never look at the time when I work, because I truly do it with passion. Capri’s fortune is that you can work in tranquility, without having to adapt to the city’s safety measures, it is beautiful how the stores can become sitting rooms where you can welcome the customers, not only with the intent of concluding a sale but for the pleasure of showing them the watches that, perhaps, they have seen on magazines and answering their questions with comprehensive explanations”.
About a month ago, we saw the conclusion of the event organized by the Pateck Philippe brand at the Capri Rooftop, overlooking the beautiful Gardens of Augustus, a deeply beautiful place, filled with history and culture.
“Pateck Philippe is in love with Capri, for the second year in a row they have chosen this location, that has been confirmed for next year as well, an exclusive and suggestive place, considering the panorama and the atmosphere you can enjoy from the terrace. During this occasion there has been the presentation of the new watches collection, placed in designated glass cases, exclusive pieces for a niche audience. During the event, clients could try the watches, and if they satisfied their taste, they could be ordered too”.
How do you see Capri in your future?
“For me, Capri represent a different life and working dimension, the most beautiful place I could ever discover, and it would be very difficult, if not impossible, leaving it one day. Here, the islanders are very welcoming and I am honored of having received such a warm welcome, there is no place in the world like Capri, it is unique and exclusive, the place where perhaps one day, not too far off, I will settle down”.
