Dario Scalella è console onorario della Repubblica di Corea dal 2017. Una nomina che nasce non solo dalle capacità imprenditoriali del manager napoletano, ma anche da una passione, quella per il taekwondo. Scalella, infatti, vinse una medaglia ai Campionati del Mondo di questa disciplina nel 1982, battendo proprio un coreano. Poi, gli allenamenti con il grande Park Young Ghil, guru del taekwondo nel mondo, hanno fatto il resto. “Sono sempre stato innamorato di questo sport, micidiale ma elegante, che richiama anche la danza. Per praticarlo bisogna avere velocità, riflessi, scioltezza, potenza. Ma anche una visione a 360 gradi, che dà la capacità di compiere un gesto giusto al momento giusto”.
Il manager è anche maestro di massaggi orientali.
“Una decennale passione che mi ha fatto diventare un esperto di medicina tradizionale orientale, sempre grazie al maestro Park”. Tutto ciò ha portato Scalella ad approfondire le conoscenze sulla Corea del Sud, parallelamente agli studi (economici in business school come l’Imd di Losanna, o l’Insead di Tolosa, ma anche geologici), alle attività manageriali e al suo ruolo di fautore dell’internazionalizzazione ai vertici della Confapi. La nomina a console è arrivata, quindi, naturalmente.
“Grazie alle mie conoscenze economiche e alle esperienze. La Corea è la quinta potenza economica al mondo e non vive solo di Samsung. La cultura è fiorente e le eccellenze vanno dal cinema, premiatissimo, al bel canto, di cui i coreani sono studiosi e validi esecutori perché hanno una capacità vocale superiore ad altri popoli. Con il consolato, oltre ai consueti servizi di assistenza ai coreani in vacanza, ovviamente, organizziamo scambi economici e culturali, iniziative e incontri. In tal senso, a Napoli ho messo su una business week e una settimana della cultura coreana al Maschio Angioino che ha avuto molto successo, con spettacoli, arte, cinema e persino dei seguitissimi corsi di calligrafia orientale”.
Infine, il consolato si occupa delle relazioni Napoli-Italia-Corea tra aziende e privati, attività che, viste le sue esperienze internazionali, riescono facili a Scalella. Che si definisce un “manager puro” e che ha presieduto (e ha fatto parte di) innumerevoli consigli di amministrazione pubblici e privati essendo esperto di M&A.
“Il mio lavoro è sostanzialmente quello di gestire aziende in crisi e rilanciarle. Mi occupo di acquisizioni, fusioni e piani di rilancio. Ricevo incarichi da imprese ed enti in crisi e ne curo le operazioni fino a determinarne l’espansione”.
Come è accaduto per Napoli Servizi, una scommessa vinta.
“Sì, un regalo che ho voluto fare alla città per la nascita di mia figlia. Una grandissima operazione fatta con un’azienda i cui libri si sarebbero dovuti portare in tribunale e che invece in 2 anni e 4 mesi è stata rilanciata”.
La capacità, la scioltezza e la velocità del manager nel gestire e organizzare provengono anche dalle sue prime occupazioni, di quando si pagava gli studi all’università facendo l’animatore nei villaggi turistici. Un lavoro che rappresentava una prima forma di gestione delle risorse umane. Gestione che poi è arrivato a insegnare all’Università Federico II.
“Ho imparato tanto da tutti i lavori che ho fatto da giovane e dalle discipline orientali, che mi hanno fatto capire che volere è potere. Poi ho insegnato per anni Economia e Organizzazione Aziendale alla facoltà di Ingegneria e su questi temi ho lavorato in diversi settori, dalle energie ai trasporti marittimi”.
Il mare è una delle grandi passioni di Scalella, esperto sub, che di Capri ama proprio tutto.
“Quello che provo per l’isola è un amore profondo, coltivato sia da terra sia da mare. Ho circumnavigato l’isola varie volte con la mia canoa rossa e vista dal mare Capri ha un respiro profondo, che pochi altri luoghi hanno con la roccia calcarea che si riflette nelle piccole insenature. Solo qui ci si rende conto di che cosa significhi entrare nel blu del mare. Tra le mie zone preferite, c’è quella di Punta Carena e del Faro, dove si possono ammirare dei bellissimi coralli. Da terra, ovviamente, mi piacciono tutte le passeggiate che si possono fare tra Capri e Anacapri e lo spettacolo più affascinante è quello di guardare dall’alto l’isola e il mare, in uno stato d’animo unico al mondo. Mi piace portare a Capri ai miei amici e la promuovo in ogni suo angolo o insenatura, come ha fatto con me Lello De Luca Tamajo, che ringrazio sempre per avermela fatta scoprire e conoscere profondamente”.

Dario Scalella has been honorary consul of the Republic of Korea since 2017. An appointment born not only from the entrepreneurial skills of the Neapolitan manager, but also from his passion for Taekwondo. Scalella, as a matter of fact, won a medal for this discipline at the 1982 World Championships, defeating precisely a Korean. To practice it, you need speed, reflexes, fluency and power. But also, a 360-degrees sight, that allows you to make the right move at the right time”.
The manager is also an expert in Oriental massage.
“A decennial passion that made me become an expert in traditional Oriental medicine, always thanks to master Park”.
All this led Scalella to deepen his knowledge on South Korea, in parallel with his studies (economic studies in business schools such as the IMD in Lausanne, or the INSEAD in Toulouse, but also geologic studies as well), the managerial activities and his role as advocate for the internationalization of the top management of Confapi, The appointment as consul, therefore, was a natural step.
“It was thanks to my economic knowledge and my experiences. Korea is the fifth economic power in the world, and it does not live exclusively on Samsung. It has a flourishing culture and its excellences range from the prize-winning cinema, to bel canto, of which Koreans are scholars and skillful performers thanks to their vocal range, of a higher level compared to other countries. At the consulate, in addition to the usual assistance services for Koreans citizens on vacation, of course, we organize economic and cultural exchanges, events and meetings. In this sense, I organized in Naples a business week and a Korean culture week at Castel Nuovo a huge success, with performances, arts, cinema, and some very appreciated courses on Oriental calligraphy”.
Lastly, the consulate handles the relationships Naples-Italy-Korea with businesses and privates, activities that, considering his international experiences, are an easy task for Scalella, who describes himself as an “authentic manager” and who has presided over (and took part in) countless management boards, both public and private, being himself an expert in M&A.
“My job is fundamentally managing businesses in crisis and relaunching them. I deal with acquisitions, mergers and relaunch plans. I receive tasks from businesses and institutions in crisis and I handle the operations, eventually leading to the expansion”.
As it happened with Napoli Servizi, a winning bet.
“Yes, that was the gift I wanted to give the city, for the birth of my daughter. A huge operation made with a business whose accounts books were about to be taken to court and was instead relaunched in two years and four months”.
The capability, fluency and speed of the manager in supervising and coordinating come also from his first works he made to pay for his university studies, working as entertainer in tourist resorts. A job representing a first form of human resources management, that he would eventually teach at the University Federico II.
“I learned a lot from all the works I did when I was young, and from Oriental disciplines, that made understand that where there is a will there is a way. Then, for years I have taught Economics and Business Organization at the Department of Engineering and on this subject, I have worked in many fields, from energy to naval transportations”.
The sea is one of Scalella’s great passion, he is an expert diver who loves everything about Capri.
“I feel a deep love for the island, cultivated on both land and sea. I sailed around the island several time with red canoe and, seen from the sea, Capri has a deep breath, that few other places have, with the calcareous rocks reflecting in the little bays. Only here you realize what entering the blue sea truly means. Among my favorite places, there is Punta Carena and the Lighthouse, where you can admire some beautiful corals. On land, of course, I like all the walks you can take between Capri and Anacapri, the most fascinating spectacle is watching the island and the sea from above, a unique state of mind in the whole world. I like taking my friends to Capri and I promote it in all its corners and bays, Lello De Luca Tamajo did with me. I always thank him for making me discover and understand the island so deeply”.
