Gennaro Borriello è console onorario dei Paesi Bassi dal 1989, uno dei diplomatici di stanza a Napoli tra i più longevi considerati anche i 7 anni in cui ha ricoperto la carica di vice console. “Una tradizione di famiglia – racconta – visto che il consolato di Olanda a Napoli, uno dei primi, risale addirittura agli anni ’20, ai tempi di mio nonno e poi di mio padre. Sono stato nominato dall’allora Regina Beatrice che nel 2013 ha poi abdicato in favore del figlio Guglielmo di cui mi pregio di essere amico. Manteniamo continui contatti con la famiglia reale e ogni anno tutti i diplomatici si vedono a L’Aia per lavorare insieme e per poi partecipare al gran ricevimento a corte dato dal Re. Da un po’ di tempo a questa parte la nostra attività è completamente cambiata e il nostro ruolo, al di là del fornire assistenza ai cittadini del Paese che rappresentiamo, è ora quello di promuoverlo attraverso la comunicazione, gli scambi commerciali e culturali. E un console oggi deve assolutamente intessere rapporti economici e diplomatici con le autorità cittadine, regionali e statali. Personalmente rappresento l’Olanda in tutto il Sud Italia (fatta eccezione per la Puglia, la Sicilia e la Sardegna), Abruzzo e Molise compresi. Sempre nel segno dell’economia, facciamo matchmaking e seminari tecnici per creare contatti concreti tra varie categorie di imprenditori olandesi e campani, con sopralluoghi sul territorio e missioni che riguardano spesso il turismo. Cercando sempre di seguire ogni iniziativa sin dalla sua nascita e fornendo anche copertura legale”.
Cosa che non riesce difficile a Borriello, visto che di professione fa l’avvocato. “Certo, mi riesce più semplice seguire gli interessi di un Paese e dei suoi cittadini assicurandogli anche un’assistenza legale diretta”.
Il console olandese è un avvocato specializzato in diritto della navigazione. “Così – racconta – pur non seguendo le orme di mio padre e mio nonno, armatori, sfruttando la tradizione e culturale e il know-how di famiglia, comunque sono attivo nello stesso settore, con un occhio particolare al diritto internazionale, amministrativo e civile. Un settore, quello marittimo, che da sempre riguarda da vicino l’Olanda, Paese di mare e di navigatori. Tradizionalmente i rapporti con il consolato onorario correvano già tra armatori e agenti marittimi. Una vocazione internazionale per antonomasia, quella del mare, comune tra Napoli e il nostro Sud Italia, l’Olanda e tanti altri Paesi del Nord Europa, dalla Svezia alla Norvegia alla Danimarca. Qui abbiamo una notevole colonia olandese, fatta spesso di militari Nato e di donne che sposano cittadini italiani, soprattutto in Costiera. Forte è anche la presenza delle grandi aziende olandesi, a partire dalla Unilever, che comprende marchi famosi come l’Algida. Ci sono poi contatti strettissimi fra i floricultori olandesi e i loro colleghi della zona vesuviana, oltre che ovviamente sinergie tra porti e aeroporti”.
Nel segno del turismo. Sono tanti gli olandesi che passano in Campania le proprie vacanze, scegliendo la Costiera e le isole.
“Sono orgoglioso – dice Borriello – che il turismo dai Paesi Bassi si sia molto sviluppato e che ora in molti si fermino di più a Napoli, senza usare la città soltanto come scalo. Ovviamente tra le mete più considerate c’è Capri. All’isola azzurra sono molto legato sin dall’infanzia. Mi ricordo la Capri della mia adolescenza, quella dei primi sandali di Canfora e del chiosco di Scialapopolo che adesso purtroppo non c’è più. Era un’isola diversa dove anche i vip venivano in punta di piedi. E a proposito di piedi, mi piacciono le passeggiate che solo qui si possono fare e sono tante. Per me, che sono amante del trekking, ognuna è un invito a nozze. Dall’Arco Naturale al Monte Solaro, dalla Migliera al Faro, finendo magari a tavola all’Olivo del Capri Palace. Mi piacciono le passeggiate senza tanta gente attorno, magari nelle viuzze trasversali a quelle più famose. Per il resto, l’isola la ammiro molto dalla barca, da dove si possono osservare prospettive meravigliose e indimenticabili”.
Gennario Borriello is honorary consul of the Netherlands since 1989, one of the longest running diplomats in Naples, considering the seven years he spent as vice-consul. “A family tradition – he tells – because the Netherlands Consulate of Naples, one of the first, dates to the 1920s, my grandfather’s and then my father’s times. I was appointed by the Queen at the time, Beatrix, who in 2013 abdicated in favor of her son Willem, of whom I have the honor of being a friend. We maintain continuous contacts with the royal family and every year all diplomats gather at The Hague to work together and then take part in the great reception at court held by the King. For some time, our activity has completely changed and our role, in addition to aid the citizens of the Country we represent, is now promoting said Country through communication, commercial and cultural exchanges. Today, a consul must absolutely weave economic and diplomatic relationships with the city, regional and state authorities. Personally, I represent the Netherlands in the entire South Italy (except for Apulia, Sicily and Sardinia), Abruzzo and Molise included. Always in the name of economy, we organize matchmakings and technical seminars in order to create effective contacts among the various categories of Dutch and Campanian entrepreneurs, with inspections on the territory and missions, often regarding tourism. Always trying to follow every initiative from their beginning and providing legal coverage as well”.
Not a difficult task for Borriello, since he works as lawyer. “Sure, it is simpler following the interest of a Country and its citizens, while also providing a direct legal assistance”.
The Dutch consul is a lawyer specialized in maritime law. “This way – he tells us – despite not following the steps of my father and grandfather, both shipowners, taking advantage of the family tradition, culture and know-how, I am nonetheless quite active in the field, with a special focus on international, administrative and civil law. A field, the maritime one, that has always affected Holland. A country of sea and navigators. Traditionally, the relationships with the honorary consulate had already been engaging shipowners and maritime agents. An international vocation par excellence, for the sea, shared between Naples and our Southern Italy, Holland and many other Northern Europe Countries, from Sweden to Norway and Denmark. Here, we have a remarkable Dutch colony, often composed of NATO troopers and women who married Italian citizens, especially in the Coast. Perhaps this is also due to the presence of many great Dutch businesses, starting from the Unilever, which includes famous brands such as Algida. There are also very close contacts between Dutch florists and their colleagues in the Vesuvius area, other than, of course, a shared synergy between ports and airports”.
Under the sign of tourism. There are many people from the Netherlands who spend their holidays in Campania, choosing the Coast and the isles.
“I am proud – Borriello says – that tourism in the Netherlands has developed that much, and that today many tourists stop there in Naples, without considering the city as a simple layover anymore. Of course, among the most contemplated destinations there is Capri. I am very attached to the blue island ever since my childhood. I remember the Capri of my youth, that of the first Canfora sandals and the Scialapopolo kiosk, which regrettably is missing today. It was a different island, where the VIP as well used to arrive on tiptoe. And talking about feet, I love the many walks you can only take here. I am a trekking lover, so they are all very inviting to me. From the Natural Arc to Mt. Solaro, from the Migliera at the Lighthouse, perhaps reaching the restaurant Olivo at the Capri Palace. I love the walks with not that many people around, preferably in the little streets crossing the most famous ones. For the rest, I observe the island from the boat, where you can admire beautiful, unforgettable perspectives”.
