“Il mio sogno è fare l’artista a 360 gradi”, Umberto Natalizio, classe 1967, caprese da generazioni, nel suo lavoro di creativo in comunicazione traspare con evidenza questa vena.
Nel suo passato una brillante carriera come comandante di navi marcantili, dopo il liceo nautico infatti è stato imbarcato per otto anni, arrivando al grado di secondo ufficiale. Tre giri del mondo completi, un’esperienza incredibile, che ha poi abbandonato per seguire il suo grande amore per l’arte e non solo.
Grafico pubblicitario, designer, illustratore, art director di grandi brand. Ha collaborato con diverse aziende capresi tra cui Chantecler, contribuendo insieme alla famiglia Aprea al lancio della Campanella, famosa in tutto il mondo, Carthusia, Grazia & Marica Vozza, ma anche per brand dall’eco internazionale come Cavalli o Vulcaflex, una company multinazionale tutta italiana specializzata nella produzione di materiali di rivestimento in tecnotessuto e pelle sintetica che produce per grandi brand come Louis Vuitton e per loro Umberto Natalizio ha realizzato anche il libro del centenario. La passione più grande è la pittura, e i suoi quadri hanno preso parte a tantissime mostre.
“Ho prodotto tante mostre dove ho esposto i miei quadri e fortunatamente non ho opere rimaste invendute e vanto clienti di altissimo livello, opere di arte. Ugo Di Martino è il mio maestro di pittura, lui un autentico surrealista, tra i suoi alunni io sono quello più selvaggio e ancora oggi si preoccupa dell’altalenante mio modo di produrre opere, perché dipingo solo quando ho l’ispirazione per farlo. Credo che comunque l’arte è un mezzo che può essere usato sia come difesa che come attacco. Mi piace esprimermi con l’arte è il mio modo per comunicare le mie emozioni, tra l’altro da caprese vivo l’isola ed è proprio qui che attingo le sensazioni e quelle che percepisco le materializzo su tela o in oggetti di design”.
In passato si è dedicato anche alla fotografia vincendo diversi premi aggiudicandosi il primo posto, e per un periodo di tempo ha gestito la sua galleria d’arte ubicata nella strada che è il confine tra via Le Botteghe e via Fuorlovado.
“Ho trasformato il mio studio in un laboratorio di idee, un’officina, una galleria poliedrica, ma poi non riuscivo a seguirlo come meritava e l’ho dato in gestione ad una caprese quale Sara Aprea. Ho collaborato con molti artisti, come Franz Cerami ed Ugo Pons Salabelle, un grande fotografo che credo tra i massimi in Italia”.
L’incontro con la galleria Trisorio per l’evento Capri Winter Wawe festivale ha sancito una bella collaborazione dove le vetrine dei negozi chiusi per la stagione invernale hanno preso vita in una mostra itinerante con opere di arte contemporanea.
“L’evento Winter Wave Festivale tenutosi a Capri lo scorso anno, a cui ho partecipato come direttore artistico, con Laura Trisorio dell’omonima ed importante galleria di arte contemporanea che conosco da diverso tempo, ma non avevo mai avuto contatti artistici, è stata un’occasione per rapportarci e collaborare, Laura è stata fondamentale, un supporto qualitativo e culturale di grande spessore, rappresentando una mostra ai massimi livelli, con artisti partenopei”.
Cosa significa essere caprese e quali sono i suoi luoghi dell’anima?
“Essere nato a Capri è importante e ne sono orgoglioso, questo mi ha permesso di conoscere persone che diversamente non avrei mai incontrato.
Un luogo di Capri con cui ho un legame speciale è Marina Piccola, li insieme a mio nonno Umberto andavamo a pescare, ancora oggi persiste una cabina in muratura con tutta l’attrezzatura. Anche la zona di Matermania dove insieme ai miei cugini in età adolescenziale eravamo soliti fare scorazzate. Se devo però staccare la spina, scelgo Monte Solaro oppure un’oretta in barca per godendomi l’isola in tutta l’essenza via mare”.
Cosa vede nel suo futuro?
“Nel mio futuro voglio fare solo l’artista, nonostante attualmente mi dedico a diverse cose, mi entusiasma particolarmente il rigore e la percezione per l’arte”.
Communicating with an artistic vein
“My dream is being an all-around artist”, Umberto Natalizio, class of 1967, Caprese for generations. In his work of creative communication, this vein clearly shines through.
In his past, a brilliant career as captain of cargo ships; as a matter of fact, after maritime school, he embarked for eight years, reaching the rank of second officer. Three complete world tours, an incredible experience he then interrupted to follow his great dream for art, and more.
Advertisement graphic, designer, illustrator, art director for several brands. He worked with several Caprese brands such as Chantecler, contributing together with the Aprea family in the launch of La Campanella, known worldwide, Cartuhisa, Grazia & Marica Vozza, but also international brands such as Cavalli or Vulcaflex, an Italian corporation specialized in the production of coating materials in tecno-fabrics and synthetic leather, producing for huge firms such as Louis Vuitton, and for them Umberto Natalizio has realized a book for their centenary. His greatest passion is painting, and his canvases have been displayed in many exhibitions.
“I realized many exhibitions where I displayed my paintings, and luckily I have never had any unsold paintings. I have clients of high level, works of art. Ugo Di Martino is my painting teacher, he is a true surrealist painter, among his pupils I am the wildest one and even today he is concerned about my fluctuating production, because I only paint whenever I have the inspiration. I believe art is a tool that can be used as both defence and attack. I love expressing myself through art, it is my way to communicate my feelings. Being Caprese, I fully live the island, and it is precisely from here that I draw my feelings and I materialize them on canvas or in design objects”.
In the past he engaged in photography as well, winning several prizes, and for some time he managed his own art gallery, situated in the alley between via Le Botteghe and via Fuorlovado.
“I turned my study into a laboratory of ideas, a workshop, a multifunctional gallery, but then I could not properly manage it, so I entrusted the management to a Caprese, Sara Aprea. I worked with many artists, such as Franz Cerami and Ugo Pons Salabelle, a great photographer, among the best in Italy”.
The meeting with Galleria Trisorio for the Capri Winter Wave Festival set forth a great collaboration, where the windows of the boutiques closed during the winter season took life in an itinerant exhibition featuring works of contemporary art.
“Last year, I took part in the Capri Winter Wave Festival, as artistic director, together with Paula Trisorio, from the important contemporary art gallery of the same name, which I have known for a long time, even if we never had any artistic contacts. It was an opportunity to known each other and work together, Laura was fundamental, a quality and cultural support of great importance, representing a high-level exhibition, featuring Neapolitan artists”.
What does it mean being Caprese, and which is your place of the soul?
“Being born in Capri is important, and I am very proud of it, this allowed me to meet people that I would have not met otherwise.
A place in Capri I am particularly attached to is Marina Piccola; there, together with my grandfather Umberto we used to go fishing, even today there is still a beach cabin with all the fishing equipment. Even the Matermania area is very special to me, when I was a teenager, I used to make some escapades with my cousins, there. When I need to wind down, instead, I choose Mt. Solaro, or a boat tour to enjoy the island in all its essence by sea”.
What do you see in your future?
“In my future I only want to be an artist, even if today I dedicate myself to several things. I am particularly excited by the rigor and the sense for art”.
