Capri è un grande amore / Capri is a great love 

General manager dell’hotel boutique Villa Helios di via Croce, che quest’anno ha vinto il premio Travellers’ Choice, il riconoscimento attribuito da TripAdvisor, in base alle recensioni positive che rilasciano le persone dopo aver soggiornato nelle strutture alberghiere. Stephane Mercier, francese d’origine e caprese d’adozione, quì vive da undici anni.

“Consiglio a tutti di venire a Capri almeno una volta nella vita, vale la pena visitare un posto come questo, conosciuto in tutto il mondo, secondo me il più bello in assoluto”.

Il suo rapporto con il mare?

“Sono un ex incursore della marina militare francese, ho un’adorazione per il mare, sono nato sull’Atlantico nei pressi di Bordeaux. Negli anni ho sviluppato tecniche di immersione, sia didattica che militare. La passione per il mare mi ha stimolato anche come fonte di guadagno, infatti sono stato capitano alla guida delle imbarcazioni della BlueRide. Amo la barca a vela e a motore. A Capri c’è un mare bellissimo, tra i più belli, impreziosito dalle calette e dalle grotte, bellezze naturali che offre solo Capri. Uno scenario imparagonabile”.

Il suo primo giorno a Capri, lo ricorda?

“Il mio primo giorno a Capri è stato molto ‘mareggiato’, in quanto l’arrivo è stato difficoltoso per le avverse condizioni meteo marine, ma nonostante tutto ho potuto riscontrare una bellezza formidabile della quale mi sono innamorato subito. Mi hanno colpito i colori argentati dati dalle nuvole in quel giorno uggioso, l’atmosfera sembrava da isola dei tesori. Mi ha colpito molto appena vi ho messo piede”.

Capri d’inverno?

“Preferisco senza dubbio l’estate per i colori, le luci, l’esplosione dei fiori e dei profumi. D’inverno però nonostante tutto si possono ammirare con più intensità le bellezze naturali, si apprezza di più la tranquillità. Tendenzialmente preferisco l’estate ma amo anche l’inverno isolano”.

A quale posto si sente più legato?

“Il posto con cui ho instaurato un legame è Villa Helios, l’albergo che vivo e guido ormai da cinque anni dove ho messo il cuore e dove ho instaurato un rapporto bellissimo con la proprietà che mi ha permesso una crescita professionale condividendola con tanti ragazzi del posto che lavorano nella struttura, che come me hanno l’obiettivo di elevarla, ed hanno uno spirito nell’accoglienza incredibile, un merito che riconosco agli isolani che l’hanno come virtù, quasi un marchio di appartenenza”.

Non proviene dal mondo dell’hotellerie, si è affacciato a questa professione ed ha avuto un giusto intuito che gli ha portato grandi soddisfazioni.

“È stata una sfida con me stesso, ringrazio dell’opportunità che mi è stata offerta dalla proprietà che ha creduto in me. Ho sviluppato delle capacità che non credevo di avere, in sintonia con lo spirito dell’accoglienza che già avevo avuto modo di formare nel mondo dello yachting, un atteggiamento che prende spunto da un carattere formativo della mia gioventù, oltre a quello personale, ho allineato il profilo professionale. Una crescita che devo alla proprietà che lo ha consentito ed incoraggiato, ma anche alla mia personalità e soprattutto ai collaboratori che mi hanno affiancato nel corso di questi anni, avendo nelle mani una struttura bellissima, dove è sempre un piacere riscontrare il ritorno, anno dopo anno, degli ospiti che continuano a sceglierci come meta per un soggiorno”.

Cosa vede nel suo futuro?

“Di sicuro farò parte del mondo del turismo e dell’accoglienza, penso di continuare su questa strada. Ho tanta voglia di continuare ad imparare, e di mettere in pratica quello che questa struttura mi ha insegnato e permesso di fare, dandomi tutti gli strumenti per poterlo fare”.

Ipotizziamo un suo ultimo giorno a Capri, cosa farebbe?

“Al mare, una nuotata in queste meravigliose acque, pranzando poi in uno dei miei ristoranti preferiti, e, terminerei con le mie valigie pronte per partire ed un cuore spezzato con qualche lacrima sapendo però che non è un addio, perché Capri non è mai un addio, il rapporto con Capri è pieno di ricordi indelebili è il vero bagaglio da portare con me. Capri è un grande amore e chi viene a Capri ha la possibilità di vivere questo grande amore”.

Capri is a great love 

General manager of the Hotel Boutique Villa Helios in Via Croce awarded this year with the Traveler’s Choice Award, the prize given by TripAdvisor, based on the positive feedbacks people leave after sojourning in the hotels.

Stephane Mercier, French by birth and Caprese by adoption, has been living here for eleven years.

“I recommend everyone to come to Capri at least once in their life, it is absolutely worth it to visit a place like this, of worldwide game, for me, the very best in the world”.

Your relationship with the sea?

“I am a former raider of the French Navy, I love the sea, I was born on the Atlantic Ocean near Bordeaux. During the years, I developed diving techniques, both instructional and military. My love for the sea also became a source of income, as a matter of fact I have been Captain of the BlueRide vessels. I love sailboats and motorboats. In Capri there is a beautiful sea, enriched by the little bays and grottos, natural beauties that only Capri can offer. An unparallel scenario”.

Do you remember your first day in Capri?

“My first day in Capri was very ‘stormy’, the landing was quite difficult because of the adverse sea conditions, yet despite all that I could discover a great beauty and I immediately fell in love. I was captivated by the silver clouds on that rainy day, an atmosphere of a treasure island. It struck me as soon as I set foot on it”.

What about Capri in winter?

“Without doubt, I prefer summer, for its colors, its lights, the explosion of flowers and aromas. In winter, though, you can nonetheless enjoy the natural beauties with more intensity, and you can better appreciate the tranquility., I prefer summer, but I enjoy winter on the island as well”.

Is there a place you are particularly attached to?

“The place I have forged a bond with is Villa Helios, the hotel I have been living and managing for five years, where I have put my heart and I have established a beautiful relationship with the owners, who allowed me a professional growth shared with the many other people working in the facility, who like me have the goal of improving it, and have an incredible welcoming spirit, a virtue I recognize in all islanders, almost like a membership mark”.

He does not come from the hotel business, he moved into this field and had the right intuition, that led him to great satisfactions.

“It has been a challenge against myself, I thank the owners, who believed in me, for the chance that I was given. I developed certain skills that I did not know I had, in harmony with the welcoming spirit that I had already developed in the yachting world, an attitude taking a cue from a formative element of my youth, I merged the professional profile with the personal one. I owe this growth to the owners who allowed and encouraged it, but also to my own personality and above all to the coworkers who supported me during this years, managing a beautiful facility, where it is always a pleasure witnessing the return, year after year, of the guests who continue to choose us for their vacations”.

What do you see in your future?

“Surely, I will still be part of the tourism and hospitality world, I believe I will continue along this path. I am very eager to learn and put into practice all that this structure taught me and allowed me to do, giving me the right tools”.

Hypothetically, how would you spend your last day in Capri?

“At sea, a swim in these beautiful waters, and then lunch in one of my favorite restaurants, and I would end it with my suitcases ready to leave, and a broken heart with some tears, knowing however that it would not be a goodbye, because Capri is never a goodbye, my relationship with Capri is full of unforgettable memories, and those are the true luggage I take with me. Capri is a great love and whoever comes to Capri has the opportunity to experience it”.
