Maurizio Di Stefano, architetto e ingegnere, rappresentante dell’Unesco e docente universitario esperto di restauro dei monumenti, è anche console onorario del Cile dal 2016. Una carica che non considera secondaria nonostante i tanti impegni in giro per il mondo e le nomine che lo hanno portato negli anni a presiedere vari consigli di amministrazione in aziende ed enti pubblici e privati, sempre orientati verso la conservazione e la gestione dei beni culturali. Oltre al lavoro che svolge quotidianamente in Campania, in Italia, nel mondo, Di Stefano ha a cuore il destino del Paese che rappresenta e di cui parla volentieri.
“Tengo innanzitutto a valorizzarne gli aspetti culturali e mi piace ricordare sempre la presenza in Campania di due Premi Nobel cileni che hanno soggiornato qui, come i poeti Pablo Neruda e Gabriella Mistral, che fu anche console onorario del Cile a Napoli. Neruda, in particolare, visse un intenso soggiorno a Capri, tra il 1952 e il 1953, e fu ospite di Edwin Cerio nella famosa Casa di Arturo in via Tragara. Il mio impegno nel segno della cultura è e sarà in futuro quello di riunire tutte le rappresentanze dei Paesi dell’America Latina con eventi, mostre e incontri internazionali. E quest’anno, dedicato proprio ai rapporti tra Italia e Cile, si festeggerà pure un grande anniversario, il 500° dal primo attraversamento del Canale di Magellano a novembre del 1520, durante il viaggio di circumnavigazione del mondo da parte del grande navigatore. Siamo in attesa, poi, nel Porto di Napoli del veliero “Esmeralda”, la bellissima goletta a quattro alberi che fa da nave scuola per l’addestramento degli allievi ufficiali della Marina Militare Cilena. Poi, ovviamente, c’è tutto il capitolo che riguarda gli aspetti economici. Si è creato un ponte tra l’Italia, Napoli e il Cile, fatto di scambi, di incubatori e startup, di aziende che investono nella cultura come nel turismo o nelle infrastrutture”.
Tutti campi in cui Di Stefano, che vanta un curriculum di pagine e pagine con più di 400 incarichi e direzioni di lavori e numerosissimi ruoli internazionali nell’Unesco e nazionali nelle università, eccelle da anni. Tra i suoi impegni figura anche quello per la ristrutturazione dello storico palazzo dell’Ambasciata del Cile a Roma, su espressa richiesta del Presidente della Repubblica Sebastian Pinera, che poi ha seguito personalmente i lavori. Di Stefano fu scelto sia come valente architetto e ingegnere sia come presidente dell’Icomos, il Consiglio Internazionale dei Monumenti e dei Siti, organizzazione non governativa globale associata all’Unesco, la cui missione è quella di “promuovere la conservazione, la protezione, l’uso e la valorizzazione di monumenti, complessi edilizi e siti per l’attuazione della Convenzione del Patrimonio Mondiale dell’Unesco”. “La differenza tra l’Italia e il Cile? Noi abbiamo 55 siti Unesco, loro 6. Che gestiscono meglio. Basti pensare alla differenza tra i Forum delle Culture a Valparaíso e a Napoli. Bisogna saper proteggere e seguire i nostri monumenti e i nostri progetti e non lo dico solo per via della mia specializzazione, una virtù familiare, che nasce da mio padre, ordinario Restauro di monumenti ad Architettura e anima della Scuola di Donnaregina. Ma anche perché mi pregio di aver avuto maestri seri e che mi hanno insegnato che la cultura è sempre connessa con l’amministrazione dei processi. E che il fare cultura non può prescindere dal conservare e gestire”.
Dalla teoria alla pratica, insomma. Di Stefano, già presidente della Scabec, la società in house della Regione Campania per la valorizzazione e promozione dei beni culturali, e di Sviluppo Italia Calabria, è stato anche il primo amministratore delegato di Napoli Servizi, società di cui ha promosso l’espansione. Da napoletano, ha una grande passione per la città, la sua cultura e i sui monumenti.
“In questo momento – dice – mi sto dedicando ad alcune chiese, che dovrebbero far rete perché rappresentano non solo un’attrattiva culturale ma anche un attrattore economico. Come presidente onorario di Icomos mi sto muovendo su un progetto, Chiese 4.0, connesso ai trasporti, che coinvolge la Regione e varie fondazioni. Vedrete”.
Progetti che riguarderanno probabilmente anche le isole, come Capri, a cui Di Stefano è particolarmente legato: “Sin da piccolo. Mi ricordo le passeggiate ad Anacapri con mio padre e poi il cantiere per il restauro della Certosa di San Giacomo. Ho visto subito le opportunità che l’isola offriva e continua a offrire, abbinando da sempre vacanza e lavoro. I miei luoghi preferiti? Capri è tutta un’eccellenza ed è un privilegio viverla mentre ci lavoro. Per quanto riguarda i ristoranti, è d’obbligo per me citare Aurora e Paolino, mentre tra i divertimenti serali, anche se ora conduco vita più ritirata, mi piace citare il Number Two di cui sono stato uno dei progettisti. Mi rilasso con i panorami dal Monte Solaro a via Krupp, fino alla Torre Saracena, dove ho anche avuto casa. Ma il maggiore relax è vedere Capri dal mare, magari arrivando al tramonto al Faro o al Riccio. Infine, vorrei ricordare un grande festival dell’isola e il suo patron: Capri Hollywood e Pascal Vicedomini. Mi ricordo quando cominciò, con attorno poche persone ma tutte entusiaste. Ora il festival è davvero l’evento dell’anno sull’isola”.
The whole Capri is an excellence
Maurizio Di Stefano, architect and engineer, is representative of UNESCO and university teacher specialized in the restoration of monuments, and honorary consul of Chile from 2016. A task he does not consider to be secondary despite the many appointments around the world and the tasks that, during the years, have lead him to preside over the board of directors of companies and public and private institutions, always aiming at the preservation and management of cultural goods. In addition to his daily work in Campania, in Italy, in the world, Di Stefano has at hearth the fate of the Country he represents and of which he gladly talks about.
“First of all, my main objective is promoting the cultural perspectives and I always like to remind the presence, here in Campania, of two Chilean Nobel Prizes who sojourned here, the poets Pablo Neruda and Gabriella Mistral, who was also honorary consul of Chile in Naples. Neruda enjoyed an intense vacation in Capri, between 1952 and 1953, and he was guest of Edwin Cerio in the famous House of Arturo in via Tragara. My commitment in the name of culture is and shall be in the future the gathering of all the representatives of Latin American Countries with events, exhibitions and international meetings. And this year, dedicated to the relationship between Italy and Chile, we will also celebrate an important date, the 500th anniversary of the first crossing of the Strait of Magellan, dated November 1520, during the circumnavigation voyage of the globe by the great seafarer. We are then expecting, in the Naples Harbor, the sailing ship ‘Esmeralda’, the beautiful four-mast schooner functioning as training ship for the officer cadets of the Chilean Navy. Then, of course, there is the subject concerning the economic perspectives. A bridge between Italy, Naples and Chile has been created, made of exchanges, incubators and startups, business investing in culture as in tourism or infrastructures”.
All fields where Di Stefano, who boasts an impressive resume with more than 400 assignments and working directions and several international roles for UNESCO and national roles for universities, has always excelled. Among his tasks there is also the renovation of the historic building of the Chilean Embassy in Rome, at the express request of the President of the Republic Sebastian Pinera, who has then personally followed the renovation works. Di Stefano was chosen both as an expert architect and engineer and as president of ICOMOS, the International Council on Monuments and Sites, a non-government global organization tied to UNESCO, whose mission is “promoting the preservation, protection, usage and valorization of monuments, building complexes and sites for the implementation of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention”.
“The difference between Italy and Chile? We have 55 UNESCO sites, they have 6. And they are better than us at managing them. Just think of the difference between the Forum of Culture in Valparaiso and Naples. We must know how to safeguard and supervise our monuments and our projects, and I am not just saying this because of my expertise, a family vocation started with my father, ordinary professor in Restoration of Monuments at the Faculty of Architecture and heart of the Donnaregina School. I say this also because I had the fortune of following competent teachers who taught me that culture is always connected to the administration process. And making culture cannot disregard the preservation and management methods”.
From theory to practice, in short. Di Stefano, already president of SCABEC, the in-house company of the Campania Region for the valorization and promotion of cultural heritage, and of Sviluppo Italia Calabria, has also been the first CEO of Napoli Servizi, a company of which he promoted the expansion. Neapolitan, he has an immense love for the city, its culture and monuments.
“Right now – he tells us – I am working on several churches, that should form a network because they represent not only a cultural attractive but also an economic one. As honorary president of ICOMOS I am working on a project, Churches 4.0, connected to transportation, involving the Region and several organizations. You will see”.
A project that will also probably involves the isles, such as Capri, to whom Di Stefano is particularly attached: “Ever since I was a child. I remember the walks in Anacapri with my father and then the construction site for the restoration of the Chartreuse of St. James. I immediately realized the opportunities the island offered and continues offering, always mixing vacation with work. My favorite places? The whole Capri is an excellence and it is an honor living it while working. When it comes to restaurants, I must mention Aurora and Paolina, while regarding the night entertainment, even if today I live a more retired life, I like Number Two, that I partly designed.
Today, I relax with the views from Mt. Solaro in via Krupp, up to Torre Saracena, where I also used to own a home. But the most relaxing thing is admiring Capri from the sea, perhaps reaching Il Faro or Il Riccio at sunset. Lastly, I would like to mention an important festival for the island and its patron: Capri Hollywood and Pascal Vicedomini. I remember when it launched, with few yet very passionate people. Today, the festival is truly the event of the year on the island”.
